Finger Lakes Laser is a small, owner-operated laser engraving, laser cutting, fiber marking, and 3D printing shop based in the Finger Lakes region of New York. About Finger Lakes Laser

Laser engraving is the core of our shop. We use a 100 watt CO2 laser, a 60 watt MOPA fiber laser, and 3D printing to create custom gifts, engraved drinkware, signs, plaques, brass jewelry, Finger Lakes products, business items, customer-supplied engraving, production runs, and precision metal marking.

We have been 3D printing since 2015 and creating laser engraved, laser cut, and custom marked products since 2019. That experience helps us handle a wide range of projects, from one-of-a-kind keepsakes to business orders, production work, and detailed part marking.

About the Owner

Finger Lakes Laser is owned and operated by Matt Jones. Matt has always had a natural interest in building, fixing, designing, and figuring out how things work. Long before Finger Lakes Laser officially started, that curiosity showed up through hands-on projects, electronics, 3D printing, problem solving, and making useful things from scratch.

Before starting the business, Matt spent about 15 years working as a dental technician in local laboratories. That background helped develop a strong eye for detail, precision, fit, finish, and small adjustments that can make a big difference in the final result.

In 2019, Matt purchased his first laser engraver and quickly realized that laser work was more than a hobby. Demand grew through word of mouth, local support, repeat customers, and people looking for custom gifts, engraving, signs, business items, and detailed work that felt personal.

Built on Detail, Quality, and Problem Solving

Many engraving projects look simple from the outside, but clean results depend on the details. Material type, surface finish, coating quality, artwork, focus, speed, power, frequency, line spacing, alignment, and finishing can all affect the final piece.

Finger Lakes Laser takes the time to match the process to the project. Some jobs need deep engraving, some need clean contrast, some need fine detail, and some need permanent marking that remains readable over time.

Laser Engraving Is What We Do

Laser engraving is not a side service here. It is the core of the shop. Finger Lakes Laser works with customers who need clean, detailed engraving for personal gifts, business items, events, local products, customer-supplied items, industrial parts, and production runs.

Every item is different. A coated tumbler does not engrave like hardwood. Stainless steel does not mark like brass. Glass does not behave like acrylic. That is why material review, proper setup, and realistic expectations matter.

The goal is always to create engraving that fits the material, the project, and the customer’s intended use.

Our Equipment and Capabilities

Finger Lakes Laser uses multiple machines so each project can be matched to the right process. Our 100 watt CO2 laser is used for wood, acrylic, glass, leather, coated drinkware, signs, gifts, cutting boards, plaques, ornaments, and many custom engraving projects.

Our 60 watt MOPA fiber laser is used for metal marking, brass work, stainless steel, anodized aluminum, metal tags, plates, QR codes, Data Matrix codes, serial numbers, compatible part marking, and production work.

3D printing supports some custom projects with prototypes, fixtures, small parts, displays, mockups, replacement pieces, and mixed-material ideas. Combining laser engraving, laser cutting, fiber marking, and 3D printing gives us more flexibility than a basic personalization shop.

For larger orders and production runs, we review the item, artwork, quantity, deadline, and setup requirements before production. Depending on the project, sample engraving, layout approval, or first-article approval may be recommended before completing the full quantity.

Industrial and Precision Marking

In addition to custom gifts and business engraving, Finger Lakes Laser offers industrial laser part marking for compatible metal parts, tags, plates, and components. This work can include logos, serial numbers, part numbers, QR codes, Data Matrix codes, identification plates, prototype marking, repeat orders, and production runs.

Some industrial and customer-supplied work cannot be shown publicly because of customer privacy, project requirements, or NDA limitations. When needed, we can review customer-supplied marking requirements, drawings, and specifications for compatible projects.

Finger Lakes Laser does not claim third-party certification unless specifically stated in writing. Customers are responsible for confirming whether our process meets their internal, contractual, regulatory, or inspection requirements.

Customer-Supplied Items

Customer-supplied items are welcome when they are suitable for laser engraving. Not every product, material, finish, coating, or shape engraves the same way, so we review customer-supplied items before accepting the job.

If you have an item you want engraved, send photos, material details, dimensions, quantity, artwork or text, and your deadline. If the item is expensive, sentimental, discontinued, or hard to replace, sample testing or a spare item may be recommended.

Local Finger Lakes Products

Finger Lakes Laser also creates local products inspired by the Finger Lakes region. These can include Finger Lakes keychains, brass lake earrings, ornaments, lake-themed gifts, signs, cutting boards, home decor, and seasonal products.

Many pieces are designed, cut, engraved, finished, and assembled in-house. That gives each product a handmade local feel while still keeping the detail and repeatability of laser precision.

Rebuilt and Still Growing

Finger Lakes Laser has also been shaped by challenges, including a major shop fire in December 2023. After rebuilding, improving the workspace, and continuing to invest in equipment and safety, the business came back stronger and continues to grow.
